Real Faith

You’ve heard the research and statistics that young people are abandoning their faith in increasing numbers. Whether attending secular college has to do with these rates or not, Oak Hills Christian College operates on the belief that a firm biblical foundation will equip you for whatever your future has in store, regardless of the career path God calls you into.

As you’re hopefully aware by now, I started my first ever blog a few weeks ago. So far my entries have gotten a pretty good response which is exciting to me, being a sixty-something grandfather of six. I’ve titled my blog “Mondays with Mookie” and everyone has been asking how I got the nickname Mookie. Okay I will let you in on the meaning behind Mookie.

Okay, I was asked by our marketing department to write a blog. Oh, yea, a blog, at 64 years old I really understand what a blog is? I am a team player so I said I can do that. Really, how hard can writing something be? Harder than you think!!

Pokemon GO Is the latest in digital entertainment that is taking the world by storm. This game is meant to get participants outside, exploring surrounding areas using geo-location to find little creatures called Pokemon. This is a phenomenon that started when I was younger and now the people of my generation have kids and are getting them into the craze as well.

High school students taking advantage of Post Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) have various reasons for entering college level courses during high school. While I enjoyed high school and had great friends, I also enjoy being challenged. I studied hard to get good grades and really liked the idea of getting a jump start on my college career so I decided to enroll in PSEO courses at Oak Hills Christian College my junior year of high school.

There is a very damaging and scary “F” word out there that we don’t like to talk about. Do you know what it is?

That would be the word Fail.  I don’t like to talk about my failures, do you?  I didn’t think so.  On the whole no one likes to talk about, draw attention to, or even think about their own failures. Here’s the important thing to remember though: how you think about failure will define you just as much as how you define success will. Those people who steward failure well are going to be happier and more succesful. They will ultimately be the keepers of the future.

As a part of our Community Life Hour (CLH) here at Oak Hills Christian College, we purposefully take one hour out of the week to meet together and spend time doing things we love with people we may not usually hang out with. It's just a part of what makes Oak Hills not only one of the great Minnesota community colleges, but also one of the best Christian universities in the region.

What is Idolatry? This may seem like a strange or unpopular topic, but for me and you it is important to talk about, and a very relevant issue for Christian college student life.

So what is it really? It may call to mind an image of praying to little statues of colorful deities, but there is more to it than that. Idolatry is making ANYTHING else in your life more important than God. It doesn’t have to be a bad thing, it can be something that starts out good, like your family, advancing in a career, etc. However, if it gets in the way of your relationship with God, if you choose something over God then you are making that thing your idol.
